In all honesty, for me, this has been an absolutely terrible winter for aurora photography, so I got all excited yesterday when aurora forecasts were for possibly some of the strongest displays we’ve seen in years. Well, we waited. Friends came over and we waited, all the while seeing reports and pictures of really strong aurora from North Dakota to Montana to Washington State and most of Canada.

And we got nothing! Friends gave up at midnight and I settled into a chair in the living room until finally at 1am the aurora popped! Got dressed for cold wind and started shooting. It started to get really strong and I thought that just maybe it’d be a good as predicted, but that wasn’t the case. It turned out to be an okay night, that quickly started to cloud up, and it was pretty much over by 2am. Still a fun night. The lights are magical, no matter how big or small.
